Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School (MMK) is a co-educational voluntary-aided school established in 1959. The school has a pupil roll of 215 children and the intake for Reception is 28 pupils. The vast majority of pupils live in very close proximity to the school.
The new Foundation block at MMK Jewish Primary caters for the Reception and Nursery classes. There are 26 children in the nursery which provides a happy, stable and caring environment where the children are provided with a stimulating and challenging curriculum both inside and in the outdoors learning area. The children in the nursery bring their own packed lunch to school.
The religious character of the school is that of Orthodox Judaism and as such the school wishes to imbue their pupils with an understanding, love and respect for the Jewish religion, a knowledge of Jewish history both biblical and modern, conversance with Ivrit, a love of their heritage and respect for Jewish traditional Torah values especially with regard to the family, and the centrality of biblical and modern Israel as a significant component of a rounded Jewish education.
MMK provides a wide breadth of activities including music and drama, hosting VIP guests and visits to places of interest and supporting many charities both local and far afield, Jewish and general. The variety of the ‘extended day’ activities include a diverse selection of clubs including, cookery, multisport, art, French, scrabble and chess. There is a weekly Torah and Toast breakfast club and a monthly Rosh Chodesh breakfast club, and recently hot lunches have successfully been introduced into the school. MMK has achieved a host of awards: The Quality Mark, Active Mark, healthy school status and Arts Mark gold award.
In the school’s most recent Ofsted inspection in 2006 inspectors said: “Pupils' personal development and well being are outstanding. The school’s provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent and a major strength of the school. Pikuach noted: “The Jewish Studies Department of the Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School is outstanding overall. Parsha and their knowledge of the Chagim is excellent.”
