Hasmonean High School is a high-performing, comprehensive school serving the Orthodox Jewish community of north west London. Boys and girls are taught on separate sites in Hendon and Mill Hill respectively, and the school as a whole has 150 places on offer for Year 7.
Hasmonean is the only voluntary-aided comprehensive secondary school in the UK that has the vast majority of students going on to yeshivas and seminaries, and then continue to the most prestigious universities that this country has to offer.
The school was founded in 1944 by Rabbi Dr Solomon Schonfeld zt"l, a devoted and dedicated pioneer of Jewish education in Britain. In addition to rescuing thousands of Jews from Europe during the Holocaust, Rabbi Dr Schonfeld launched the Hasmonean day school, welcoming it into the fledgling Jewish Secondary Schools Movement (JSSM). Originally situated in Golders Green, the boys' school moved to its current home in Hendon in 1947, with the girls studying in a nearby building in Parson Street. The present girls' school site was acquired in 1975.
Hasmonean gained voluntary-aided status in 1984. Since then, both the boys' and girls' schools have continued to flourish, with some buildings benefiting from extensive renovation and modernisation in recent years.
Remaining totally committed to Rabbi Dr Schonfeld's principles of 'Torah Im Derech Eretz', pursuing excellence in Torah and secular studies, the school is able to offer its students a state-of-the-art education in a wide range of curriculum subjects.
At Hasmonean, extracurricular activities are also important with a variety of clubs and societies on offer ranging from drama to debating. Each year, various residential visits and shabbatonim are organised for students. Emphasis is also placed on supporting the community, with Hasmonean boys regularly conducting religious services in old age homes and hospitals.
In its last Ofsted report in January 2008, inspectors said: "Hasmonean is a good school with many outstanding features”. It praised “exceptionally high” academic standards at GCSE level adding: “Students come to school ready to learn and are eager to contribute to lessons. Their exemplary behaviour means that lessons are not disrupted and can be conducted at a good pace and in a positive climate."
Students graduating from Hasmonean are fully equipped with the tools they need to live as observant Jews in the modern world, acutely aware of their communal responsibilities, proud of their religious heritage and with the support of a strong network of lifelong friends.
